QR Code Not Scanning - Troubleshooting Guide

Last updated: 1/31/2026

If your QR code isn't scanning properly, don't worry. Most issues have simple solutions. Here's how to diagnose and fix common QR code scanning problems.

Quick Checks First

Before diving into complex solutions, try these quick fixes:

Clean the camera lens: Fingerprints and smudges can prevent accurate scanning. Wipe the phone's camera lens with a soft cloth.

Check the lighting: Make sure there's adequate light on the QR code. Too dark or too bright with glare both cause problems.

Hold steady: Keep the phone steady and give the camera a moment to focus. Don't move around while scanning.

Try different distances: Move the phone closer or farther from the QR code. The optimal distance is usually 4 to 8 inches.

Try different angles: Point the camera directly at the code, not at a sharp angle.

Phone Camera Settings

iPhone: Open Settings, scroll to Camera, and make sure 'Scan QR Codes' is turned ON. This should be enabled by default in iOS 11 and later, but check anyway.

Android: Most modern Android phones can scan QR codes with the default camera app. If yours doesn't, download Google Lens from the Play Store - it's free and works excellently for QR codes.

Alternative: If the built-in camera doesn't work, try a dedicated QR code scanner app. Many are available for free in app stores.

Print Quality Issues

If the QR code won't scan consistently, the print quality might be the problem:

Too Small: QR codes under 1 inch are difficult to scan. Reprint at a larger size, at least 2x2 inches for most uses.

Blurry or Pixelated: This happens when you print a low-resolution PNG at a large size. Download the SVG version and reprint, or use a larger PNG size.

Low Contrast: If your QR code is light gray on white, it won't scan well. Use black or very dark colors on white or light backgrounds.

Damaged or Wrinkled: If the printed code is creased, torn, or water-damaged, it may not scan. Reprint on fresh material.

Distorted: Make sure the code wasn't stretched or squashed during printing. It must remain perfectly square.

Environmental Factors

Where and how the QR code is displayed matters:

Glare: If the code is behind glass or in direct sunlight, glare can make it unscannable. Move it to a location with indirect lighting or add a matte finish.

Too Dark: In dimly lit areas, cameras struggle to focus. Add lighting near the QR code or move it to a brighter spot.

Curved Surface: QR codes on curved surfaces like bottles or round signs are harder to scan. Use flat surfaces when possible.

Too Far Away: If your code is on a poster 10 feet up a wall, customers can't scan it. Place codes at reachable height.

Obstructed: Make sure nothing is blocking part of the QR code - no tape, stickers, or other items covering even a corner.

Testing Your QR Code

To verify if the problem is the code or the phone:

Test Multiple Devices: Try scanning with different phones - both iPhone and Android. If it works on some but not others, it's a phone-specific issue.

Test on Screen First: Before printing, test your QR code by displaying it on your computer screen and scanning it with your phone. If it doesn't work on screen, it won't work when printed.

Try Other QR Codes: Scan a different QR code with the same phone. If other codes work fine, your printed code has an issue.

Checking the Link

If the QR code scans but doesn't go to the right place:

Verify Your Link: Go to your RatingFlow dashboard and copy your review link. Paste it into a browser to make sure it works and goes to your review page.

Check Funnel Status: Make sure your review funnel is Active, not Paused. Look for the green toggle at the top of your business page.

Old QR Code: If you changed your custom URL slug after printing your QR code, the old code won't work. Generate and print a new one.

When to Regenerate Your QR Code

Sometimes the best solution is to generate a fresh QR code:

If you've changed your review link URL.

If your print quality is poor, generate a new one at a larger size.

If you used low-contrast colors that don't scan well, switch to black and white.

If the QR code is very old and has worn or faded, print a fresh one.

Still Not Working?

If you've tried everything and your QR code still won't scan consistently:

Download a fresh QR code from your dashboard as SVG format.

Use black and white only, no custom colors.

Print at least 3x3 inches on high-quality paper.

Test the new print with multiple phones before distributing.

If issues persist, contact RatingFlow support with details about what you've tried and photos of your printed QR code.
